Kay has been a student and a protector of nature all her life. Her long membership in the California Native Plant Society has linked her with like-minded people, and expanded her knowledge about our regional plants, land, and climate. She designed the Native Plant Garden at Old Town Historic State Park, a 25-year plan to restore part of the Park to a complex landscape with plants that the Native American people used for millennia.

Kay’s interest in native landscapes for native wildlife can be seen in a garden showcased in “Audubon At Home: Gardening For Birds and Butterflies”. Sunset Magazine’s Fresh Dirt blog showcased two of her landscapes: one featuring the flannelbush and the other that restored a lawn to the native coastal sage.
